Welcome to Nana Duck’s Cottage!
Firstly, please let me introduce myself, I’m Laura and have had family living in the Thirsk area of North Yorkshire for many years. A beautiful market town, with lots of dog friendly cafes, shops and restaurants to enjoy as well as many walks on your doorstep, it is the ideal place for enjoying all that North Yorkshire has to offer.
A really delightful little town, especially for those of us with a passion for the great outdoors, walking, enjoying time with our dogs and for avid James Herriot fans, as Thirsk was where the original books were set!
My mum, Stephanie lived in Thirsk at Nana Duck’s Cottage for around thirty years and when she passed away, our sentimental feelings for her gorgeous cottage meant we had to find a way to keep it in her memory forever.
We were lucky enough to secure a mortgage on her cottage and decided what better way than to keep it in her memory, than to enable other people to enjoy Thirsk as much as she had, and our idea for a holiday cottage was born! We named it after her – “Nana Duck’s Cottage” as she always loved feeding the residents ducks in the courtyard and adjoining riverbank and that’s what all her grandchildren called her!
We were due to open her cottage in April 2019, but sadly, the world was struck by the Covid pandemic and this delayed our opening significantly. Now though, many people have enjoyed staying at her cottage and it’s been a joy for us to see how much everyone loves visiting her cottage, Thirsk and the surrounding areas. It really is the perfect base to explore all that North Yorkshire has to offer.
Nana Duck’s Cottage offers 5 star accommodation and sleeps four (King and double), and is situated within a small mews, overlooking Cod Beck, the river, as it winds its way through this historic town. The cottage itself is a renovated old mill building that stood derelict for decades, until the 1990s when it was fully renovated to create ten or so properties. The marketplace is a two-minute walk, with a wide range of shops, cafes, restaurants, museums and much more.
With the enormous help of friends and family, my partner Neil and I, plus Herb the dog, we have put lots of love and care into doing renovations at both cottages to make them lovely and cosy, with lots of modern touches, mixed with some of the vintage items!
